With the holiday season coming to a close, one Grand Haven nonprofit feels extra thankful.
The Momentum Center for Social Engagement received a $75,000 grant from the Zenko Family Field of Interest Fund and the Greatest Needs Fund of the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation to benefit the teen and preteen program. The center received $400 raised during the Friendsgiving event through The Grand Armory, and the staff at DeBoer, Baumann & Company, P.L.C. hosted a jean day and raised $175 to donate to the center.
Barbara Lee VanHorssen, experi-mentor at the center, said they couldn’t be more grateful for the support they’ve received.
“We began by asking the community where they saw gaps that we could work to fill. It is deeply rewarding to see the community continue to be part of this grassroots solution as we work together to end the stigma of mental illness, addiction, and disability,” she said.
The center provides recreational and social opportunities for ages 11 and older with mental illness, disabilities, and addiction.
There is an upcoming event addressing racism at the center (714 Columbus Ave., Grand Haven) as part of its monthly Inspire! speaking series. Dale Nesbary (Muskegon Community College) and others will discuss the center’s “Cultural Immersion: Across the Bridge” event coming up this summer. They will speak about their own experiences of racism, why they feel the project is important, and what they hope to accomplish.
The Momentum Center is a grassroots movement to create a stigma-free community, by hosting community conversations and operating The Momentum Center for Social Engagement to address mental illness, addictions, and disabilities. The Momentum Center also houses Just Goods Gifts and Café.
