In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Black Law Students Association at WMU-Cooley Law School’s Auburn Hills campus organized a student volunteer session at the Salvation Army Pontiac Corps and Community Center last month.

In addition, WMU-Cooley’s Auburn Hills campus held events on MLK Day, featuring a brunch, a scholarship award presentation, and the discussion “Assessing the Dream: A Progress Report” with attorneys and WMU-Cooley graduates Aaron Burrell, Michael Lamb and LaToya Palmer as keynote speakers.

“Dr. King’s speech is a call to serve,” Lamb said during the event. “And I have questions: How are you accessing the dream? How are you working towards the dream? How are you serving your fellow man? Because that is our responsibility.”

Lamb is a criminal defense attorney at his private practice, Lamb Legal and Consulting Services in Southfield.

He graduated from WMU-Cooley in 2014. After graduation, Lamb worked at a popular Detroit business incubator.

In 2015, he opened his own firm where he focuses on serving those in metro Detroit with effective criminal defense counsel.

Burrell practices complex litigation, labor and employment law, appellate law, and minority business enterprises at Dickinson Wright.

He has defended clients in a wide range of discrimination and unfair labor practice claims in state and federal court, as well as before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Michigan Department of Civil Rights and the National Labor Relations Board.

Palmer is the head of human resources and operations at Umlaut Company in Southfield. Prior to joining Umlaut, she served as the managing attorney at Palmer Law Group PLCC, attorney and counselor at Pilchak & Cohen, and a law clerk at the United State District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

A 2012, graduate of WMU-Cooley, Palmer was the recipient of the Alumni Distinguished Student Award.

WMU-Cooley’s Equal Access to Justice Day suspended classes in observance of MLK Day.

Students, faculty and staff devote the day to reflect and attend programs on the role of law and lawyers in protecting the right of everyone and assuring equal access to justice.
