Good behavior will trim jail sentence of Nassar’s boss

EAST LANSING (AP) — Good behavior likely will cut four months off a one-year jail sentence for a former dean at Michigan State University who was convicted of misconduct in office and neglect of duty in an investigation related to the Larry Nassar scandal.

William Strampel is scheduled to be released on April 3, the Lansing State Journal reported.

Good behavior credits generally aren’t available in Michigan prisons, but they are on county jail sentences.

“We’re treating him no differently than anyone else,” said Jason Ferguson, chief deputy at the Ingham County sheriff’s office.

Strampel was dean of MSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine and Nassar’s boss. He was convicted of neglecting to ensure that Nassar followed certain rules during examinations of females after a complaint was filed.

Nassar worked at MSU and USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians. He has been sentenced to decades in prison for molesting women and girls with his hands and possessing child pornography.

Ginsburg to present award named for her to philanthropist

WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg usually is on the receiving end of awards, but she’ll be handing out one in her name this week to a prominent philanthropist.

Agnes Gund, who has given millions of dollars to support criminal justice reform and reduce mass incarceration in the United States, is the first recipient of the Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Woman of Leadership Award.

The 86-year-old Ginsburg will present the award to Gund at a Valentine’s Day dinner at the Library of Congress. The award was established by the Dwight D. Opperman Foundation.

Gund, former president of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, sold the Roy Lichtenstein painting “Masterpiece” for $165 million in 2017 and created her Art for Justice Fund.

Puppy in crime: Deputies take man, dog into custody in theft

BRANDON, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man and his furry “accomplice” were taken into custody by authorities who said the man shoplifted from a store.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said Logan Wilson was arrested and charged with petit theft and possession of meth, WTSP-TV reported.

Wilson admitted to stealing $259 worth of items from Bass Pro Shops, deputies said. He was arrested during a traffic stop after he was seen leaving the store.

Deputies also took Wilson’s four-legged friend into custody. A sheriff's office Facebook post showing an officer holding a small puppy said deputies took care of the “cutest accomplice” before handing him over to Hillsborough County Animal Services.

Animal services will care for the dog until his owner is released from jail. Animal services has listed the puppy as “pre-adopted.” Deputies said that if the owner doesn’t claim the dog, it will go up for adoption.
