A retirement reception in honor of Miriam Siefer, longtime chief of the Federal Defender Office for the Eastern District of Michigan, took place Feb. 20 at the Westin Book Cadillac in Detroit. Siefer, pictured with her husband Joe Bachrach, was saluted by scores of members of the bench and bar at the farewell party. Siefer, chief of the FDO for the past 25 years, began her legal career with a small criminal defense firm in Southfield, which led to a teaching opportunity at Wayne State University Law School. She joined the FDO in 1979, serving as chief deputy for 15 years before becoming head of the federal agency in 1994, the same year she was named the recipient of the Leonard R. Gilman Award. Siefer, who will mark her 70th birthday in June, will be succeeded on an interim basis by Richard Helfrick, a 37-year veteran of the FDO.
