Signature Event still a 'go,' say organizers

While the dominoes are falling on scheduled events across the country due to the spread of the coronavirus, organizers of the Oakland County Bar Foundation’s Signature Event 2020 are still planning to hold the fund-raiser on Thursday, April 30 at Oakland Hills Country Club.

Of course, that plan could change about as fast as it takes to wash your hands, which is the 20-second time frame that has become ingrained in the global psyche since the outbreak began.

In a statement released March 12, the OCBF said: “After much consideration, the Foundation is still planning to hold the Signature Event. However, we will continue to monitor the situation and will keep attendees posted. Oakland Hills has indicated a willingness to work with us in rescheduling the event should the need arise.”

The Signature Event is the OCBF’s chief fund-raiser each year, according to Lynn Sirich, president of the Foundation.

“In the last five years alone, the Foundation has raised more than $1.5 million at this event because of the generous support of the many sponsors in Oakland and surrounding counties,” she said, noting that the OCBF has contributed more than $2.65 million to legal assistance and legal education programs since 2002.

Last year, the OCBF “supported worthy programs, such as Legal Aid & Defender, Jewish Family Services, CARE House, Lakeshore Legal Aid, and Beaumont (Patient Legal Support Program) to name a few,” according to Sirich. The 2019 version of the event raised approximately $238,000, as more than 400 members of the legal community attended the festivities at Oakland Hills.

In 1999, an alliance with the Oakland County Bar Association created the current OCBF organization, setting in motion the means for a greater fund-raising profile and the Signature Event of today.
