Lizzo treats Detroit hospital staff to lunch amid pandemic
DETROIT (AP) — Music artist Lizzo brought lunch to staff at a Detroit hospital, expressing gratitude for their services during coronavirus pandemic, according to hospital officials.
In a Monday Twitter post, Henry Ford Hospital officials announced that the Detroit native provided emergency room personnel with a meal, The Detroit News reported.
“We did everything we could to keep it safe for y’all. ... I love you guys,” Lizzo said in a video posted on online. “Thank you so much for being the heroes in this story. And we’re staying inside and we’re praying and thinking of you guys every single day. God bless you.”
"#Lizzo, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you so much for making our day brighter with your generosity," Henry Ford officials tweeted.
Lizzo won Best Pop Solo Performance, Urban Contemporary Album prize and Traditional R&B Performance at 62nd Annual Grammy Awards in January.
As of Wednesday, Detroit had more than 2,400 cases and reported 83 deaths.
Michigan’s top court looks at small town speeding dispute
SARANAC (AP) — The state’s highest court is taking a look at a speed limit dispute in a small town in western Michigan.
The Supreme Court said it will hear arguments in the months ahead in the case of Anthony Owen, who was accused of drunken driving in Saranac in Ionia County.
A sheriff's deputy said the stop was justified because Owen was speeding in a 25 mph zone. But Owen’s lawyer argued that the speed limit actually was 55 mph by default because there was no sign on Parsonage Road.
A state appeals court panel ruled in favor of Owen and threw out evidence of drunken driving, saying a “reasonably competent” officer should have known that Owen couldn’t be stopped for speeding.
But the Supreme Court recently said it’s wondering if the officer simply “made an objectively reasonable mistake of law.”
The court wants lawyers to look at a 2014 U.S. Supreme Court case involving cocaine and a traffic stop in North Carolina. The justices said the stop was lawful because the officer’s mistake about that state's brake lights law was rational.
Truck hauling toilet paper catches fire on Texas interstate
HUTCHINS, Texas (AP) — A tractor-trailer hauling toilet paper crashed and caught fire near Dallas early Wednesday, spilling the hot commodity all over an interstate.
The fire shut down westbound lanes of Interstate 20 near I-45 in Hutchins, the Texas Department of Transportation said.
The driver of the truck was not hurt, officials said.
The toilet paper appeared to be large rolls typically used in stores, restaurants and other businesses. Texas Department of Transportation officials said the load of toilet paper “burned extensively,” according to Dallas TV station WFAA.
Toilet paper has been in high demand amid the coronavirus pandemic. Producers ramped up production and shipping operations to resupply stores wiped out by consumers buying toilet paper and paper towels in bulk.
