Construction in the time of Coronavirus, revisited

The photo of the work on the Muskegon Convention Center above was taken at the end of February - there are brightly jacketed workers barely visible - and below on March 28.

As mentioned last week, there is some ambiguity about the state’s “Stay Home” order regarding what is or is not an “essential” construction activity.

In many places across the state, that has been interpreted liberally by constructon companies.

For the city of Muskegon’s work on the high-profile Lakeshore Convention Center, located downtown by the newly-renamed Mercy Health Arena, the decision has recently been made to discontinue construction.

The project completion was to be Jan. 2021 before the pandemic changed most everyone’s plans.

“They’re taking a break while we try to figure out what our next steps are,” said City Manager Frank Peterson.
