County treasurer expands options for tax foreclosure prevention

Macomb County Treasurer Lawrence Rocca has announced expansion of programs to mitigate any potential increase in tax foreclosures due to economic hardships caused by COVID-19.

Earlier this spring, Rocca withheld all occupied homes and businesses from tax foreclosure this year due to the pandemic.

“In an effort to provide additional relief and prevent foreclosures that may result from these uncertain economic times, I am implementing a four tiered approach to address financial hardship extensions,” he said Wednesday. “This new approach builds upon our success with extending the time taxpayers have to redeem their properties from foreclosure and takes advantage of new legislation in order to provide greater relief to our taxpayers.”

County residents requiring assistance may now be eligible for a reduction in delinquent taxes, interest and/or fees under a Pay As You Stay Agreement, provided the city, township or village they live in agrees to participate.

They have until June 22 to opt in. If they don’t, Rocca is urging residents to contact his office at 586.469.5190.

“Preventing owner-occupied foreclosures has been, and continues to be, a top priority of my office,” Rocca said. “Over the past three years, my staff and I have worked hard to prevent foreclosures on owner-occupied homes.

“Last year after working out repayment plans with over 783 homeowners, we had a 98 percent success rate of helping homeowners avoid foreclosure and stay in their homes.”

Voting underway for State Bar elections

Voting has begun in the 2020 State Bar of Michigan election.

This year, elections are being held for positions on the Judicial Tenure Commission, the Board of Commissioners in Districts H and I, and the Representative Assembly in Circuits 6, 7, 16, 22, and 40.

Unless an attorney’s address is on file is in one of the districts or circuits where there is a contested race, members will only receive a ballot for the Judicial Tenure Commission race.

All active Michigan attorneys with an email address on file with the State Bar may vote securely online.

Members will receive an email message informing them it is time to vote. Included in the message will be an embedded link taking the recipient directly to the voting site and a ballot containing only the races for which the lawyer is entitled to vote.

The email will come from sbmelection@electionservicescorp.com with the subject line “Vote Now in the 2020 State Bar of Michigan Election—E-Ballot enclosed” and not from the State Bar.

If any members have not received an electronic ballot, the SBM suggests they check their SPAM filter.

Voting will end at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, June 15.
