Get to Know Zana Tomich

A founding partner of Dalton & Tomich, PLC, Zana Tomich frequently serves in the role of general counsel to her clients, advising on varied subject matter.

Growing up in a small business environment, and as an integral part of her family’s restaurant, which operated for nearly four decades, she developed the business mindset early on, along with an appreciation for what it takes to be a successful business leader. That appreciation and understanding forms the foundation of all her client relationships.

Today, Tomich advises emerging and established small businesses and other closely held organizations on a wide range of business legal issues serving as general counsel to creative companies, financial institutions, restaurants and dozens of other businesses.

Why did you become a lawyer? I enjoy helping people solve problems and getting through some of their most difficult business challenges.

What’s your favorite law-related TV show, or movie?  I recently binge-watched People v. O.J. Simpson. Having lived through those events as a teenager, I got a whole new perspective watching the show as an attorney.

What’s your proudest moment as a lawyer? In retrospect, co-founding Dalton & Tomich, PLC.  At that time in my life, it was a huge leap of faith but ten years later, after I look at what we’ve built, I am so thankful and have the utmost gratitude to my partners and colleagues.

What do you do to relax?  I like to do reformer Pilates and am an avid baker.  They sort of even each other out.

What other career path might you have chosen?  I probably would have been a psychologist/therapist.  But I do a bit of that when I counsel my small business clients.

What would you say to your 16-year-old self?  Probably a lot of the same stuff I say to my 14-year-old daughter, and neither of them would listen.

Favorite app:  Who am I kidding, Instagram.

Favorite music:  Anything I can sing karaoke to.

What is your happiest childhood memory?  Summer vacations in Traverse City.

What do you wish someone would invent?  A Teletransporter.

What has been your favorite year so far and why?
I am fondly thinking of 2019. It was our first full year as a family of four, in our newish home, and one where we enjoyed a lot of highs. Generally, life keeps getting better. (Except for 2020).

What’s the most awe-inspiring place you’ve been?  The Grand Canyon.

If you could have one super power, what would it be?  Predict the future.

What’s one thing you would like to learn to do? Properly serve a tennis ball.

If you could have dinner with three people, living or dead, who would they be? Malcolm Gladwell, Oprah, and Andrew Yang.

What’s the best advice you’ve received?  “This too shall pass.”

Favorite place to spend money:   I love to travel, so I will say the J.W. Marriott.  But in reality, Costco.  I seem to achieve a new high spend amount every time I go there.
