Antitrust Section plans Virtual Fall Forum for Sept. 24
The State Bar of Michigan’s Antitrust, Franchising, & Trade Regulation Section will conduct its free Virtual Fall Forum on Thursday, Sept. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m.
For its third annual Fall Forum, the section is offering two programs to provide information on some of the latest developments in antitrust and franchise law during this unique time.
The forum’s schedule includes:
• 6 p.m. Fireside Chat
With Michigan Assistant Attorney General Joseph Potchen, Chief of the Corporate Oversight Division and Chief of the Consumer Protection Bureau in the Office of the Michigan Attorney General.
Section Chair Cody Rockey, of Dykema Gossett PLLC, to discuss recent enforcement efforts in the antitrust and consumer protection space. Topics will include the Office of the Michigan Attorney General’s challenge to the T-Mobile/Sprint merger, its role as a plaintiff in a series of cases alleging price fixing of certain generic drugs, its efforts to protect consumers from price gouging during the ongoing global pandemic, and more.
• 7 p.m. Hot Topics in Franchise and Employment Law—Navigating The New Normal
Although everyone has felt the impact of the current global pandemic, it has raised unique issues for franchise networks, franchisors and franchisees, particularly with respect to employment matters.
Section Vice Chair Brian Witus, of Saretsky, Hart, Michaels, & Gould, will lead a panel discussion with several experienced franchise and employment law attorneys addressing a myriad of questions, issues and challenges that have been posed by the coronavirus pandemic.
The panel discussion will focus on real world experiences in navigating through these unchartered and ever-evolving waters and thoughts on best practices moving forward as everyone navigates the new normal.
The panel will include Helen E. R Mills of Fahey, Schultz, Burzych, Rhodes; Ronald A. Sollish of Maddin, Hauser, Roth, & Heller PC; and Moe Shrikian of Hungry Howies Pizza & Subs.

‘State of Employment-based Immigration’ focus of webinar
The Association of Corporate Counsel-Michigan Chapter (ACC-MI) will present a webinar sponsored by Jackson Lewis PC on “A State of Employment-Based Immigration Under COVID-19 and the Trump Administration” on Tuesday, September 15, from 2 to 3 p.m.
This webinar will discuss current COVID-19 related travel restrictions and visa suspensions and the impact to executive travel, business travel, and international work assignments. It will also include review of impending regulatory and policy changes.
Speaking at the program will be Jackson Lewis Principal Attorneys Aimee Guthat and Alexandra LaCombe.

‘Skills Training 101’ offered via Zoom by Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan
The Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan (CDAM) will present the webinar “Skills Training 101” on Thursday and Friday, September 10-11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. via Zoom.
The program offers hands-on skills training for new criminal defense attorneys with 5 years or less experience.
Speaking at the webinar will be Patricia A. Maceroni, Jack Homes, Nadine A. Hatten, and Timothy Kohler.
This seminar is compliant for 16 hours of Standard 1 Michigan Indigent Defense Commission Skills Training.

‘Racism and the Jews’ is the topic of a September 3 program via Zoom
A program titled “Racism and the Jews: History, Conscience and the Future” will be offered via Zoom on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m., featuring Susannah Heschel, chair of the Jewish Studies Program at Dartmouth College.
“Is rising anti-semitism a species of racism or ‘hate,’ or is it a separate phenomenon?” asks a spokesperson for the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, which is sponsoring the program along with the Coalition for Black and Jewish Unity and the Jewish Community Relations Council. “The program will feature a clip from ‘Shared Legacies,’ which features lessons of Black-Jewish cooperation and a discussion with a new generation of Black leaders.”
