Wayne State University Law School student Jessica Biondo was recently named a 2020 Ms. JD fellow. She is the first Wayne Law student and the second student from Michigan to receive this honor.
Created 10 years ago, the Ms. JD Fellowship is a project in partnership with the American Bar Association Commission on Women in the Profession to promote mentoring and professional development for future female attorneys. This early mentorship and career guidance assist young women leaders in becoming more active in the legal community.
Biondo is in her third year at Wayne Law and is an admissions ambassador, senior note editor for The Journal of Law in Society, Mock Trial student coach and a member of the TYLA National Mock Trial team. She’s also co-president of the Italian American Student Law Association and previously served as president of the Health Law Society. Biondo also received the State Bar of Michigan Health Care Law Annual Scholarship.
During Law School, Biondo has worked for the Michigan Department of Attorney General Health Care Fraud Division and Wayne Law’s Legal Advocacy for People with Cancer Clinic. Prior to attending Law School, she worked for Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit in various departments, including the ER, interventional radiology and revenue cycle. Biondo’s interests are in health care law and bioethics, and after graduation, her goal is to pursue a career either representing health care providers at a firm or serve as in-house counsel for a health care system.
Biondo has two goals she would like to accomplish through the Ms. JD program. “First, I am interested in developing mentors who share similar interests or are also interested in niche or technological areas of law,” she said.
“Second, I aim to put myself in the best position possible to develop skills and knowledge that will allow me to help other women, including those with STEM backgrounds. I feel compelled to take everything that I have been given and repay that by helping others. A chance to join a nationwide network of incredible women in law is a step towards paying it forward.”
Fellows were selected based on their academic performance, leadership and dedication to advancing the status of women in the profession. The 12 winners reflect a full range of diverse interests and backgrounds, with women pursuing opportunities in public interest, academia and the private sector in every region of the country. More than half of the recipients come from groups that have traditionally been underrepresented in the legal profession.
