For the past 20 years, Karen McDonald has served Oakland County as an assistant prosecutor, private practice attorney, and Circuit Court judge.
She will be sworn in today as Oakland County’s first new prosecutor in more than a decade.
McDonald’s virtual investiture is scheduled via Zoom at 7 p.m. and will include nearly 500 attendees.
Among those attending will be Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, a state-wide champion of criminal justice reform, who will speak on the importance of McDonald’s victory— both for Oakland County residents and for the future of the criminal justice system.
Gilchrist will be joined by Gary Torgow, chairman of TCF Financial Corp. and influential community leader in the city of Detroit, and Chief Justice Bridget Mary McCormack, who, after this year’s re-election, will be entering into her eighth year on the Michigan Supreme Court.
The investiture will mark the first step in McDonald’s career as Oakland County prosecutor. After unseating the 12-year incumbent prosecutor by a margin of 65.76 to 34.16 percent in the August primary, McDonald is confident that her “strong leadership will pave the way for criminal justice reform” when she takes office in January.
Her success in August was followed by a second decisive victory in November, where McDonald defeated Republican candidate Lin Goetz by a 14 percentage point margin.
