Webinar to examine expungements in 2021

The Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan (CDAM) will present the webinar “Empty Your Head Of  (Nearly) Everything You Thought You Knew About Expungements” on Tuesday, Jan. 12, from 11 a.m. to noon via Zoom.

This webinar will address the new “set aside” statutes that become effective April 11, 2021. 

Speaking at the program will be Margaret Sind Raben of Gurewitz & Raben PLC.

Cost for the webinar is $30.

FBA schedules online new lawyers seminar

The Federal Bar Association, Eastern District of Michigan Chapter, along with  U.S. District Court, will present the 45th annual New Lawyers Seminar via Zoom on Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 12-13.

At the virtual event, attendees will receive practice tips and real-world advice about law, procedure and strategy from Michigan’s top lawyers and judges.

Cost for the two-day webinar is $75. Registration fee includes presentation materials and a one-year local chapter membership.

Participants will also have the opportunity to take part in a mass swearing-in ceremony held during the seminar and be admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

Governor names new director of Office of Children’s Ombudsman

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has seleclted Deputy Legal Counsel Suzanna Shkreli to serve as director of the Office of Children’s Ombudsman (OCO).

Prior to her service in the governor’s office, Shkreli served as an assistant prosecuting attorney with the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office in the Child Protection Unit where she prosecuted crimes against children involving physical and sexual abuse.

She also has conducted training for law enforcement officials throughout Albania on Crime Victims’ Rights on behalf of the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Prosecutorial Development and Training (OPDAT).

Shkreli will succeed Judge Lisa McCormick who was appointed to the 30th Circuit Court of Ingham County.

Her term will begin Jan. 4, subject to Senate approval.

“Suzy is a tough, whip-smart public servant who has spent years working on behalf of the children of Michigan, and she has served as a key member of my team as we have worked to protect all Michiganders from the COVID-19 pandemic this year,” said Whitmer. “While she will be sorely missed in my office, I and everyone on our team know that Suzy is the right person to serve as Director of the Office of Children’s Ombudsman.”
