Nemeth Law kicks off 2021 Raising the Bar series via live Zoom
Raising the Bar, an educational series increasing employer awareness of current issues in employment and labor law presented by Detroit-based Nemeth Law, P.C., returns Wednesday, January 27, in a virtual format to offer its annual labor and employment law edition. According to Nemeth Law co-managing partner Terry Bonnette, employment law promises to be another moving target this year, as companies continue their struggle with the impact of a worldwide pandemic on the workforce and consider what’s in store with a new administration and a Supreme Court with a newly appointed justice.
“2020 may be over, but all of the workplace challenges it created are not,” Bonnette said. “From Covid-19 vaccine considerations and exemptions to responsibilities with sick leave for employees who have had Covid-19 and are experiencing ‘long-hauler’ effects...it is hard for employers to keep track of all the moving pieces. Add on top of that a new administration and a shift on the Supreme Court, and we’re bound to see even more changes.”
Hot topics to be addressed include:
• The EEOC's new initiatives addressing religious freedom and religious discrimination;
• Voluntary extension of Emergency FMLA and Emergency Paid Sick Leave;
• Workplace vaccination requirements;
Remaining ADA compliant during and after a pandemic (medical exams, accommodation, harassment, and working from home);
• DOL's new rule for determining if someone is an independent contractor under the FLSA;
• Challenges to LGBTQ discrimination protections under both state and federal law;
• Other updates from the Supreme Court, EEOC, OSHA, MERC and LARA.
Hensien takes charge as CEO of Clark Hill
Clark Hill, an international AmLaw 200 ranked law firm, announced Thursday that John Hensien has assumed leadership of the firm as its chief executive officer.
“I am excited to be leading Clark Hill into 2021 and beyond and grateful for having been entrusted with the firm’s future,” said Hensien. “Three months into my transition to leadership, we plunged into a global pandemic followed by social and political unrest. I am proud of the indelible character of everyone at Clark Hill which brought us through those difficult times. I enter my leadership in 2021 with a sense of optimism and look forward to serving the firm and our clients.”
John Hern, who served as Clark Hill’s CEO for 18 years, will move into a new role as co-chair of the firm along with Jeffrey Conn, leader of both the firm’s Banking and Financial Services practice and the Pittsburgh office. Hern and Conn will both retain their positions on the firm’s Executive Committee and will support Hensien in his role as the firm’s CEO.
Hensien will place his immediate focus on a number of strategic initiatives, and on evolving the firm’s service model in line with changing market needs. A central priority will be the expansion of the firm’s client relationship program.
“It is more important than ever that our firm listens to our clients and develop a comprehensive understanding of their businesses and industries,” says Hensien. “And that we not only help navigate the present, but also help them plan for the future.”
