Federal Bar to present ‘Seditious Conspiracy’

The Federal Bar Association, Eastern District of Michigan Chapter, will present a Criminal Law Seminar: “Seditious Conspiracy” online via Zoom on Thursday, Feb.18, from noon to 1 p.m.

The FBA Criminal Law Committee will host a panel discussion with experts involved in United States v. Stone, also known as the Hutaree case.

Moderating and sitting on the panel will by U.S. District Court Judge Victoria Roberts.

Other panelists include: Barbara McQuade, former U.S. attorney, currently a law professor at the University of Michigan; Judge Jonathan Tukel, former AUSA, chief of National Security Unit and current Michigan Court of Appeals judge; criminal defense attorneys William Swor and James Thomas; and Richard Helfrick, deputy defendant, Federal Community Defender’s Office.

Association looks at strategies for advising trademark clients

The Michigan Intellectual Property Law Association (MIPLA) will host a virtual luncheon meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 23, from noon to 1 p.m. via Zoom.

During this luncheon, Steven L. Permut, a shareholder at Reising Ethington PC, will be presenting “Failed Trademarks that Enhance the English Language.”

Permut is a registered patent attorney and was a professor of trademark and unfair competition law at Ave Maria School of Law. 

The presentation will provide a review of trademarks that have become genericized, along with strategies for advising trademark clients at the outset of the marketing and registration process.

Levin Center launches new podcast focused on legislative oversight

The Levin Center at Wayne Law recently launched a new podcast titled “Oversight Matters,” with a focus on legislative oversight.

Host Ben Eikey embarks on a behind-the-scenes look at important legislative oversight and investigations by both state legislatures and Congress and the community involved in such work.

The podcast will feature personal stories and ways in which legislators and their staffs uncover waste, fraud, and abuse in government programs as well as the facts behind public policy reforms.
