GRAND RAPIDS— On March 19, WMU-Cooley Law School’s Grand Rapids campus held an Honors Convocation. Adjunct Professor Jeff Ammon spoke at the virtual ceremony.
Several law students were honored with the Leadership Achievement Award:
Michaela Bessant served as president and treasurer of the Black Law Students Association, and as a Student Bar Association senator and committee member. She participated in Phi Delta Phi, an International Legal Honor Society, and the Organization of Women Law Students. She was a teaching assistant for the Academic Resource Center, Introduction to Law, and Property I.
Cody Brock was chair of the Student Academic Relations Board and a Mentorship Board member. He was a mentor for the West Michigan Student Bar Association; and competition chair of Moot Court.
Cody Hayward served as a vice president, chief-of-staff, and Senator of the West Michigan Student Bar Association; and was a teaching assistant for Contracts I and Taxation.
Melissa Heinz, who also received the Alumni Distinguished Student Award, served as a vice president and secretary of the Organization of Women Law Students, and a senator and mentor for the West Michigan Student Bar Association. She has been active with Moot Court, and served as president, vice president, and competition chair for Moot Court. She was executive articles editor on Law Review. She was a teaching assistant for Contracts I and II, Property II, Personal and Professional Responsibility, and Civil Procedure II.
Peter Tanoos served as events chair, senator, and mentor for the West Michigan Student Bar Association. He also was treasurer and general member of the Moot Court board and a teaching assistant for Evidence.
Shanda Vander Ark, was a Mock Trial competition participant and interim president of the Delta Phi International Legal Honor Society. She was treasurer, senator, wellness liaison, and Budget Committee leader for the West Michigan Student Bar Association. She was an executive articles editor and managing associate editor on Law Review. She served as a research assistant and teaching assistant.
Kennedy Winnie was treasurer for the Organization of Women Law Students. She also served as a senator and committee member for social media on the West Michigan Student Bar Association; was a member of the Black Law Students Association, and an associate editor for Law Review.
