SBM section takes close look at women and incarceration

The State Bar of Michigan’s Prisons & Corrections Section will present a “Women and Incarceration Seminar” online Saturday, June 5, from 9:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. via Zoom.

The online program will examine issues affecting women who are incarcerated. Speakers will discuss the affect of trauma on personal growth, the most challenging issues facing incarcerated women.  Participants will also hear from directly impacted women about their person experiences.

Topics will include:

  • Centering Practice, with Kintla Striker 
  • The Neurobiology of Trauma, Mind-Body Interventions, and Incarcerated Women, with Kintla Striker
  • Five Issues Plaguing Incarcerated Women, with Representative Tenisha Yancey and Annie Sommerville, chief of staff for Senator Jeff Irwin 
  • Our Voices: A Dialogue with Impacted Women

‘Lawyer Mindfulness’ focus of online event

Western Michigan University Cooley Law School’s Wellness Committee will present “Lawyer Mindfulness with Katie Stanley” online Tuesday, June 22, from noon to 1 p.m. via Webex.

Stanley, an attorney and community engagement officer at Legal Services of Eastern Michigan, primarily practices in fair housing civil rights enforcement and community education.

She is also a Mindfulness Initiative advisory board member at the Crim Fitness Foundation, a Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute Fellow, a member of the State Bar of Michigan Lawyers and Judges Assistance Committee, and a regular contributor in the Practicing Wellness column of the Michigan State Bar Journal.

Stanley is currently pursuing a doctorate with a dissertation focus on wellness in attorneys following mindfulness based interventions.

Macomb County shelter schedules annual Survivors Golf Outing

Turning Point in Mount Clemens has scheduled its 5th Annual Survivors Golf Outing for Friday, June 25 at the Cracklewood Golf Club in Macomb.

Turning Point provides services and support that help victims of sexual assault and domestic violence recover emotionally and regain control of their lives.

“The community support and proceeds from this event will help us continue to provide these critical services,” said Sharman Davenport, Turning Point president and CEO.

Ticket prices are $150 for a single or $500 for a foursome. In addition to golfing, tickets include lunch, a steak dinner, course games, 50/50, and raffle drawings.
