The Litigation Section of the American Bar Association will conduct the “ABA Cross-Border Virtual Institute: The Intersection of Global Discovery, Privacy and Data Security” online Wednesday through Friday, July 21-23.
The intricate matrix of international privacy, cyber security, data transfer and e-discovery obligations continues to quickly develop and become even more complex. Attorneys will have the chance to get the latest information from leading experts and regulators at a lower price and without the costs of travel. The faculty of international data privacy, cybersecurity and E-Discovery thought leaders will offer:
• Interviews and discussions with European privacy regulators with interactive sessions that give everyone an opportunity to ask questions
• A review of data privacy considerations in a post-Schrems II and post-Brexit Europe
• Discussion of new challenges in cross-border discovery and information governance in a “work from home” world
• Insights on the impact of privacy and cybersecurity considerations on cross-border M&A
• A robust ethics discussion
This Institute was created for attorneys and privacy professionals to understand the complex interplay between e-discovery, cyber security and privacy across and among jurisdictions with an emphasis on the difficulties and tensions for organizations doing business in the U.S., the E.U. and the U.K. Because the conference is virtual this year, organizers are able to take advantage of privacy thought leaders in Brazil, China, Australia and the APAC to provide an even more global view in 2021.
The three days of learning will consist of:
Day 1—The day is going to begin with an interview of a privacy thought leader on the growing privacy and cyber challenges facing international businesses. The day will then have two panels. The first will be on the developments in GDPR, Standard Contractual Clauses and Schrems II since last July. The second will focus on the special privacy, discovery, cyber security and information governance challenges presented by a significant portion of employees working from home.
Day 2—The days starts with an interview of a member of the ICO. A panel of regulators will then discuss the events of the last year and, more importantly, where they see things going in 2021 and beyond. The day will close with a panel on cyber incidents and how to protect yourself (and respond to) the massive escalation in ransomware and other cyber assaults.
Day 3—The final day of the conference will have another interview with an in-house privacy leader and her thoughts on the next privacy challenges facing international companies. The panels in Day 3 will address the impact of cross border privacy, cyber and e-discovery on mergers and acquisitions and the final panel of the conference will discuss the various ethical traps and pitfalls in international investigations.
While the world recovers from the pandemic and the ABA looks forward to being in person in 2022, this is a chance to get the latest information and CLE from leading lights of the international privacy arena at a lower price and without the cost of travel.
The ABA is offering one complimentary registration per organization to in-house counsel. The ABA reserves the right to determine whether a registrant is eligible for an “in-house counsel” discounted rate. In addition, the ABA is offering complimentary registrations to individual U.S. federal and state court judges—limited to individual judges only. Applications must be submitted by Friday, July 16.
Registration closes on July 20 at noon. To register for the conference, visit www.americanbar.org and click on “events.”
