NALS National Conference rolls into Detroit this September
NALS, the association for legal professionals, will hold its 2021 National Conference at the Sheraton Detroit Metro Airport from September 16-18. The theme of the conference this year is “Driving the Soul of Legal Professionals,” and the association is excited to return to in-person education and networking.
An expert line-up of presenters is set to deliver 19 sessions with 11 CLE credits available for legal support professionals across a range of current topics including: diversity, equity, and inclusion; leadership skills; immigration issues; criminal justice; and unauthorized practice of law.
This year’s return to the in-person format also provides numerous opportunities for members to reconnect with old friends and make new ones in a safe and accessible setting. The schedule kicks off with a “Hello Detroit” reception on Thursday evening and will close with a Motown Revue Party with DJ Exquisite on Saturday evening.
In addition to the education and networking programs, the event will include an exhibit hall of legal support service providers. Attendees can also look forward to the NALS Foundation “sweeps”—an exciting raffle and silent auction fundraiser with great prizes.
The Michigan state and Detroit local chapters are actively planning this year’s event. Each group has been an active part of NALS for over 50 years and they are excited to bring both national and local legal experts to the conference.
Legal support professionals who are not members of NALS are invited to attend, as well as to consider joining NALS, to advance their professionalism.

Biden makes selection for his top Supreme Court lawyer
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Wednesday nominated acting Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar to be his administration's top Supreme Court lawyer on a permanent basis.
Prelogar has served in the position on an acting basis since January, arguing two cases before the Supreme Court in that role last term.
Prelogar is a seasoned appellate lawyer who served from 2014 to 2019 as assistant to the solicitor general. If confirmed, she would be only the second woman to lead the solicitor general office on a permanent basis. The other — Elena Kagan, solicitor general from 2009 to 2010 — is now a Supreme Court justice.
During her prior tenure at the Justice Department, Prelogar was tapped to serve on special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 election as an assistant special counsel to Mueller.
She has also spent time as a partner at Cooley LLP and an associate at Hogan Lovells, and has taught a course at Harvard Law School on Supreme Court and appellate advocacy.
After graduating from law school, Prelogar clerked for Judge Merrick Garland of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. She then served back-to-back Supreme Court clerkships for Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Kagan. After that, she joined Hogan Lovells in its Supreme Court and appellate practice.
