ABA event to look at 'How Black Struggle Shaped White America'

The American Bar Association will present the webinar “Red, White & Black: Reflections on How Black Struggle Shaped White America” on Tuesday, Sept. 7, beginning at 2:30 p.m. via Zoom.

This event provides a timely discussion on how Black struggle has shaped America and the American legal tradition throughout this nation's history.

The panel brings together three eminent law professors/legal historians:

  • Kevin Brown – Richard S. Melvin Professor of Law, Indiana University Bloomington Maurer School of Law
  • Dr. T. J. Davis – Emeritus Professor, Arizona State University
  • Dr. Martha S. Jones – Society of Black Alumni Presidential Professor and Professor of History, The Johns Hopkins University; Professor, SNF Agora Institute, Johns Hopkins University
  • Dr. James Roane (moderator) – Assistant Professor of African and African American Studies, Arizona State University

Jones will discuss how Black women defied both racism and sexism to fight for the ballot, and how they wielded political power to secure the equality and dignity of all persons. This is the topic of her latest book, “Vanguard: How Black Women Broke Barriers, Won the Vote, and Insisted on Equality for All.”

Brown will examine, more broadly, how Black struggle has impacted American law and jurisprudence through the Civil Rights Movement.

Davis will address the historical impact of Black struggle on the U.S. Constitution, writ large.
