Turning Point is inviting supporters to participate in the 14th Annual Tara's Walk on Saturday, Sept. 25 at Freedom Hill Amphitheater in Sterling Heights or participate virtually.
Tara’s Walk is a kickoff event for Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.
In 2007, Tara was tragically murdered by her husband. Turning Point and Tara's sister formed a partnership to honor her memory with the annual Tara's Walk event.
Organizers note that domestic violence impacts one out of every three women.
"There is also a major impact on children exposed to domestic violence,” said Dr. Sharman Davenport, president and CEO of Turning Point.
Exposure to violence can harm a child's emotional, psychological, and even physical development,” she said.
Turning Point recently developed a housing program that includes a safe, furnished home, educational opportunities, and financial and career coaching services for those seeking a new start after leaving the shelter. It allows survivors the chance to live a life without violence.
Tara's Walk participants may join as an individual, connect with an existing team or start a new team.
The registration fee is $25.
Funds raised support the Tara Liberation Fund, which helps domestic violence survivors in situations that require immediate assistance.
