Three groups plan ‘Membership Roundup’

The Wolverine Bar Association, D. Augustus Straker Bar Association, and Association of Black Judges of Michigan will host a “Membership Roundup” event Thursday, Sept. 30.

The networking event that kicks off the 2021-2022 bar year will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. at Central Kitchen, 660 Woodward Avenue in Detroit.

WSU online event looks at counterterror surveillence

Wayne State University Law School will continue the Wayne Law Legal Briefs series on Thursday, Sept. 30, with Profs. Peter Hammer and Khaled Beydoun leading a discussion on “Reframing and Reconstructing Counterterror Surveillance.”

The seminar will take place online from 5 to 6 p.m. via Zoom.

Beydoun is a law professor at Wayne State University, a Scholar-in-Residence at the Berkman Klein Center at Harvard University, and associate director of the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights in Detroit.

Beydoun is author of the book “American Islamophobia: Understanding the Roots and Rise of Fear,” and co-editor of “Islamophobia and the Law” published by University of Cambridge Press.

Hammer was named the A. Alfred Taubman Endowed Chair at Wayne State University Law School in fall 2018.

He has taught at Wayne Law since 2003 and is the director of the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights. The Keith Center is dedicated to promoting the educational, economic and political empowerment of under-represented communities in urban areas and to ensuring that the phrase “equal justice under law” applies to all members of society.

SBM section plans live and online conference

The Elder Law and Disability Rights Section of the State Bar of Michigan will conduct its Annual Meeting & Fall Conference Monday through Wednesday, Oct. 4-6.

It will be hosted on Zoom as well as in person at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, 1 Wenonah Park Place in Bay City.

The section is offering an add-on seminar: a VA benefits course taught by VISPRO owner and operator, Karen McIntyre on Monday, Oct. 4, at 8 a.m. This three-hour course counts as a CLE credit towards VA accreditation.

There is no charge to attend the Annual Meeting. The Fall Conference pricing options are listed on the registration site.
