State Bar section hosts annual meeting, program online

The Insurance & Indemnity Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan will conduct is Annual Meeting & Program online Thursday, Oct. 7, from 3:30 to 6 p.m. via Zoom.

As part of the program, the section will present a panel discussion with attorneys Lisa Sewell DeMoss and Richard E. Hillary on “Health Insurance Forecast: How Will Michigan No-Fault Changes Impact Health Insurance?” at 4:30 p.m.

DeMoss retired recently as professor of insurance and business law and director of the Insurance and Corporate Law and Finance graduate programs at Western Michigan University Cooley Law School. Previously she served as general counsel, corporate compliance officer and corporate secretary for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. She has also provided strategic advice and risk management services to health care entities.

She has served on and chaired a number of governing and advisory boards including the Detroit Bar Association, the Detroit Bar Foundation, the Board of Visitors of the Oakland University School of Nursing, the Risk Management and Insurance Advisory Center at Olivet College, and the Michigan Insurance Hall of Fame Board. She also served for ten years as presiding officer of the Ethics Board for the city of Rochester.

DeMoss has lectured and written on health care reform under the Affordable Care Act and other insurance related topics. She is currently a member of the State Bar of Michigan and the Insurance and Indemnity Law and Health Care Law Sections.

Hillary is a member of Miller Johnson and has been practicing law since 1999. He is a commercial litigator. Hillary focuses his practice on representing medical providers in their claims against insurance companies for nonpayment of medical bills. These claims primarily involve denials under Michigan’s no-fault act, employer-sponsored health benefit plans (ERISA), and traditional insurance.

Hillary is a frequent speaker in the area of healthcare reimbursement, He is also an instructor with the Hillman Trial Advocacy Program, the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA), and
the Michigan Judicial Institute (MJI). He is listed in “The Best Lawyers in America®” for Commercial Litigation. Before joining Miller Johnson, Hillary served as law clerk for retired Michigan Court of Appeals Judge William B. Murphy.
