MIPLA presents discussion on changes to IP law
The Michigan Intellectual Property Law Association (MIPLA) will host a virtual luncheon meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 19, from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. via Zoom.
Speaking on “Changes to IP Law under the COVID-19 Relief Bill” will be University of Detroit Mercy School of Law Prof. Melissa Eckhause.
Eckhause’s research lies at the intersection of technology, intellectual property law, and art, and focuses on the rights of visual artists, musicians, and other creators in the digital age. Prior to entering academia, she represented music and film producers, Fortune 500 companies, start-ups, entertainment professionals, and professional athletes.
Eckhause joined the Detroit Mercy Law faculty in 2020 as a visiting professor.

Panel to discuss ‘How to Handle a Criminal Case’
The D. Augustus Straker Bar Association will present “How to Handle a Criminal Case” on Saturday, Oct. 23, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Panelists for the program will include Vassal N. Johnson II, Kareem Johnson, Richard Taylor, and A.J. Hamilton.

ABA section releases report on graduate exam, seeks comments
The Council of the ABA Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar is seeking comment on a just-released independent consultant report examining the 2018 study by the Educational Testing Service on the predictive value for law school applicants of its Graduate Requirement Examination (GRE).
Comments on the report, posted under General News on the section’s website, are due Oct. 31. The council, the governing body of the section which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as the national accrediting agency for programs leading to the J.D., will consider the report at its next meeting, scheduled for Nov. 18-20.
“The report will be reviewed by the council at its November meeting to determine future guidance to schools on the use of the GRE,” said Bill Adams, ABA managing director for Accreditation and Legal Education.
Adams said in 2020, 1.47% of the entering first-year class, or 549 applicants out of 38,233, were admitted with a GRE score.
