Applications sought to fill vacancy on state Court of Appeals

Applications are being accepted for a seat on the Michigan Court of Appeals, 2nd District, left vacant by the death last month of Judge Jonathan Tukel.

Applicants must be members of the State Bar of Michigan who meet the legal qualifications for this office. Applicants must reside within the judicial district.

A questionnaire, writing samples, resume and supplemental documents must be submitted using the online portal at www.michigan.gov/appointments and received by 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28.

Additional letters of recommendation can still be submitted after the initial submission to judicialappointments@michigan.gov.

Discussing changes in IP Law under the Covid-19 Relief Bill

The Michigan Intellectual Property Law Association (MIPLA) will host a virtual luncheon meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 19, from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. via Zoom.

Speaking on “Changes to IP Law under the COVID-19 Relief Bill” will be University of Detroit Mercy School of Law Prof. Melissa Eckhause.

Eckhause’s research lies at the intersection of technology, intellectual property law and art, and focuses on the rights of visual artists, musicians, and other creators in the digital age. Prior to entering academia, she represented music and film producers, Fortune 500 companies, start-ups, entertainment professionals and professional athletes.  

Eckhause joined the Detroit Mercy Law faculty in 2020 as a visiting professor. She previously taught at the University of Southern California, Golden Gate University School of Law, and Texas A&M University School of Law.

A look at litigation with the state and its agencies

The Michigan Defense Trial Counsel (MDTC) will host a webinar titled “A Court Room Trial Attorney in the Public Policy and Regulatory World” on Wednesday, Oct. 27, from noon to 1 p.m.

The session will discuss what administrative and regulatory litigation with the State of Michigan and its agencies can look like and will examine the key Administrative Procedures Act concepts and Court of Claims Act procedures that attorneys should know.

The featured speaker will be Zachary C. Larsen of Clark Hill PLC. He represents companies in regulatory and environmental litigation and counsels industrial and agricultural businesses through compliance and permitting concerns.
