Biernat reappointed to chief judge post

The Michigan Supreme Court has reappointed Judge James M. Biernat Jr. as chief judge for Macomb County Circuit Court as well as Macomb County Probate Court and the 42nd District Courts.

During his tenure as chief judge, Biernat has overseen the completion of a multi-year, multi-million dollar campus renovation project, an expansion of the court’s efiling capabilities and the creation of a new OWI/Sobriety Court and Family Dependency Court.

He has also navigated the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic while safely maintaining court operations.

As he embarks on another term as chief judge, Biernat said he hopes to build on existing momentum to further expand the courts technology initiatives and continue to increase the accessibility of the court system for all litigants.

“I am humbled and honored that the Supreme Court has chosen to reappoint me as chief,” Biernat said. “Our court system has faced unprecedented challenges,
particularly since the beginning of the pandemic, but thanks to the dedication of m colleagues and the employees of our court system, we have met these challenges head on.

“I look forward to two more years of innovation and progress, working closely with our Macomb County executive and board of commissioners. And I’m sincerely grateful for the trust the Supreme Court has placed in me.”

Biernat has served as chief judge since 2016.

He was appointed to the bench by then Gov. Rick Snyder in 2011.

Biernat’s appointment was among dozens of similar appointments made by the Supreme Court at courts across the state.

The following judges were appointed as chief judges of the courts indicated. The appointments are for two year terms:

  • Judge John M. Chmura - 37th District Court
  • Judge Kathleen G. Galen - 38th District Court
  • Judge Kathleen E. Tucco - 39th District Court
  • Judge Joseph C. Oster - 40th District Court
  • Judge Kimberley A. Wiegand, for a one-year period commencing Jan. 1, 2022: Judge Stephen S. Sierawski, for a one-year period beginning Jan. 1, 2023 - 41 A District Court
  • Judge Sebastian Lucido - 41B District Court
