Law student Christin DewBerry attended Tennessee State University, initially pursuing athletic training, until her work study professor advised her to study political science and pursue a sports law degree.

“The funny thing about graduating as a political science major is that my dad told me that should be my major—I guess the saying is true, ‘parents know best.’ I’m exactly where he said I’d end up,” she says.

During undergrad, DewBerry served as a legislative intern for Sen. Katrina Robinson at the Tennessee State Legislature, receiving a Senate Resolution commending her work.

“Having the opportunity to work at the Tennessee State Legislature was truly an experience,” DewBerry says. “With Sen. Robinson being a freshman senator, the pressure was on from day one walking into the office. She was insistent on pushing her agenda and creating change for her hometown and I had to rise to the challenge. That was probably the most fun part, watching everything play out.

“One of my roles was tracking her legislation through both the House and the Senate to see what steps we may need to take, or what meetings need to take place. So, watching the bills come from legal to then being introduced on the Senate floor was the most exciting and pleasing part of the process.”

DewBerry is now in her 1L year at Detroit Mercy Law School, where she is a Dean’s Fellow.

“I’ve been enjoying criminal law, which challenges me to come up with creative arguments and contracts which challenges me to put the pieces together,” she says.

“It’s been a pleasure starting this journey at Mercy, everyone has been so welcoming and understanding of the transition. I love being in such a supportive environment.

“Having the opportunity to be a Fellow at Mercy has truly been a blessing and I’m excited to see where my journey goes. I’m not sure what exactly my career holds but I know I want to litigate for a little while then maybe a role in public service but I know I’m trusting God’s plan—the specifics I will know when it is time.”

A Detroit native, DewBerry was raised in West Bloomfield where she attended all her secondary schooling including graduating from West Bloomfield High School.

“I recently moved to Sterling Heights, which is a completely new environment for me, but what better time than now to try new things,” she says.

With two older brothers and an older sister, DewBerry says she is “the baby of the bunch” in the family.

“My dad and I have a close relationship—my mother passed when I was young, so he and I were the only two for years while my siblings were in college,” she says. “We spent a lot of time watching movies, which is both of our favorite pastimes, and eating good food, another one of our favorites.”
