Professor Monica Hakimi, the James V. Campbell Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Faculty Research, has been elected co-editor-in-chief of the American Journal of International Law (AJIL), effective April 2022. Her election was approved by the Executive Council of the American Society of International Law (ASIL) following a unanimous vote by the AJIL Board of Editors. Ingrid Brunk Wuerth, the Associate Dean for Research and Helen Strong Curry Chair in International Law at Vanderbilt School of Law, will serve as co-editor-in-chief.

Hakimi is a leading scholar in the fields of public international law and U.S. foreign relations law. In addition to serving on the Board of Editors of the American Journal of International Law, she serves on the Advisory Board for the Max Planck Encyclopedia of International Law and the U.S. Department of State Advisory Committee on International Law. Her research ties together doctrine and theory to examine how international law operates and adapts to contemporary challenges, particularly in the areas of human and national security.

“Monica’s wealth of experience and research at the forefront of public international law and U.S. foreign relations, as well as her enthusiasm for advancing international law scholarship, make her an exciting choice to be the next AJIL co-editor in chief,” said Mark D. West, David A. Breach Dean of Law and Nippon Life Professor of Law. “For nearly 100 years Michigan Law has been uniquely and deeply committed to the study of international law and in this tradition, Monica’s editorship will bring even more opportunities for our students to explore new perspectives, advance new ideas, and affect the development of law and legal systems. I look forward to the indelible contributions that Monica and Ingrid Wuerth will make as AJIL co-editors-in-chief.”

AJIL is the world’s preeminent peer-reviewed scholarly journal, focusing on international law and international relations. Published quarterly since 1907, the Journal features articles, editorials, notes, comments, and book reviews by pre-eminent scholars and practitioners from around the world addressing developments in public and private international law. The Journal also contains analyses of decisions by national and international courts and tribunals as well as a section on contemporary U.S. practice in international law. AJIL is supplemented by a quarterly online publication, AJIL Unbound, which includes short, original essays discussing new ideas and developments in the field.

"I’m really very honored to be able to serve as co-editor-in-chief of AJIL, which is an invaluable resource to scholars and practitioners of international law,” said Hakimi. “Now, as much as ever, we need platforms like AJIL to engage seriously and creatively with the global issues that we confront; I'm excited to help steer that conversation. I feel particularly lucky to follow in the footsteps of Curtis Bradley [University of Chicago Law School] and Larry Helfer [Duke University Law School], who have done a wonderful job moving the Journal forward, and to work with Ingrid Wuerth, who is an extraordinary talent. Ingrid and I envision making the Journal even more intellectually vibrant, more diverse in its content, and more appealing to a broader audience than it now is."
