George Clarence Stewart, age 87, a lifelong member of the Washtenaw County Bar Association, died peacefully at home on Dec. 19.
Born and raised in Saginaw, George graduated from St. Mary’s High School with honors in 1952.
He graduated from the University of Michigan with honors in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in history; and continued his education at The University of Michigan Law School obtaining his Juris Doctor degree in 1959.
He spent the early years of his law career working in public service and spent the later years of his career in private practice in Ann Arbor with his good friend and brother-in-law, John Toomey.
George met the love of his life, Patricia Marie Carroll, while washing dishes in her sorority at The University of Michigan. They married in January 1960 and had four children over the next seven years.
George is survived by his wife Patricia and children, Genevieve Carroll Stewart (Jan Schlaff) of Ann Arbor, Daniel George Stewart (Shannon Stewart) of Ann Arbor, Jacqueline Margaret (Stewart) Atchison (Thomas Atchison) of Clarkston, and Matthew Joseph Stewart (Donna Bilkovic) of Gloucester, VA. He is also survived by five grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Ann Arbor on Dec. 27.
