 State Bar accepting nominations for Representative Assembly awards

 

Nominations are now being accepted for two State Bar of Michigan Representative Assembly awards honoring attorneys for their outstanding achievements. 
 
The Michael Franck Award honors a Michigan attorney for their contribution to the improvement of the legal profession. The Unsung Hero Award honors a Michigan attorney who exhibits the highest standards of practice and commitment for the benefit of others. Both awards are given annually.

Nominations forms are available online at www.michbar.org/generalinfo/awards and are due by Saturday, February 26. 

Nominees for the awards must be State Bar of Michigan members in good standing. The honors can be for contributions made in the past year or by virtue of cumulative effort or service. 

The Representative Assembly’s Nomination and Awards Committee will review the nominations and select the recipients. The Representative Assembly is the final policy-making body of the State Bar.

‘Remote and Hybrid Hearings with Self-Represented Litigants’ focus of January 20 webinar

 
The National Center for State Courts will conduct a webinar offering “Tips for Conducting Remote and Hybrid Hearings with Self-Represented Litigants” on Thursday, January 20, beginning at 3 p.m. via Zoom.

Addressing the digital divide; communicating scheduling changes; providing legal information in layman’s terms on court websites; managing the waiting room. Since the start of the pandemic, courts across the country have adapted their processes to allow for remote and virtual proceedings.  This online discussion will focus on best practices for engaging with attorneys and self-represented litigants in remote and virtual hearings. 

The webinar will feature a high-energy, practical discussion with judges and court administrators who have been engaging with self-represented litigants in remote and hybrid hearings. The speakers include:

• Chief Justice Paula Carey, Massachusetts Trial Court

• Andrew Campbell, manager of the Remote Hearing Technology Unit, The Vermont Judiciary

• Danielle Hirsch and Zach Zarnow, Court Consulting Services, National Center for State Courts (co-moderators)
