‘Supreme Court Update’ webinar offered by ABA Jan. 13

The American Bar Association will present a “Supreme Court Update” webinar on Thursday, January 13, from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

The speakers will explain recent Supreme Court developments and matters awaiting decision. The panel will give special attention to the pending Northwestern University 401(k) fee litigation that has the potential to significantly impact ERISA litigation going forward, and revisit Rutledge v. Pharmaceutical Care Management Association, the court’s most recent pronouncement on the scope of ERISA preemption. The impact of the court’s decision in Thole v. US Bank will also be addressed, particularly with respect to how the decision has been applied in the health plan arena and areas other than its core standing ruling, such as class certification.

The speakers will also address pending petitions for certiorari, and predict which cases may attract the court’s attention in the months ahead.

Speaking at the webinar will be panelists Emily Costin of Alston & Bird LLP, Washington, D.C., and Sara Pikofsky of Steptoe & Johnson LLP, Washington, D.C.; along with Moderator Joseph C. Faucher of Trucker Huss, APC, Encino, CA.

Cost for “Supreme Court Update” is $150 for ABA members, $125 for section members, and $175 for non-members. To register for the webinar, visit www.amer icanbar.org and click on “events.”

The Levin Center at Wayne Law will present “Congressional Investigations: Shaping our Understanding of the American Story” as a Zoom webinar on Thursday, January 13, from noon to 1:15 p.m.

In January 2022, the Levin Center will release 15 Portraits in Oversight, profiles that describe important congressional investigations and trace the work of key figures in the history of legislative oversight. The Portraits explore congressional oversight from 1792 to the present day, including inquiries into the Civil War, covert CIA operations, Enron, and Watergate and such figures as Representatives John Dingell and Elijah Cummings and Senators Harry Truman and Joe McCarthy. The panel of historians will explore the role of congressional oversight in our history and how these investigations influenced our understanding of the American story.
