Three streets in Ella Sharp Park to temporarily close

At its Jan. 25 meeting, Jackson City Council approved a plan to close portions of Birchwood, Maplewood and Hickory in Ella Sharp Park for the rest of the winter season, to curb illegal activity and reduce the number of streets to be cleared in the winter.

The Council also approved a construction contract for a water main replacement on S. West Avenue between W. Michigan Avenue and Carlton Boulevard. The current water main is more than 100 years old and is undersized. The project, to begin sometime this year, is being paid for through City water funds.

A bridge spanning the Grand River on E. High Street will be replaced. The City Council approved a construction plan with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) that will pay for the majority of the project. The bridge is nearly 60 years old.

The Council approved the installation of 25 streetlights along neighborhood streets, responding to resident requests.

The City Council approved a conditional license for a marijuana grow facility on Hupp Avenue.

The next City Council meeting is Tuesday, Feb. 8.
