Justices hit the road for ‘Court Community Connections’
As part of its “Court Community Connections” program, the Michigan Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in People of the State of Michigan v David Allan Lucynski, Supreme Court Case No. 162833 at Hillsdale College’s Plaster Auditorium, located at 33 E. College St.in Hillsdale, on Tuesday, April 26,
The event will feature remarks from retired Chief Justice Stephen J. Markman. Tuscola County Assistant Prosecutor Eric Wanink and defense attorney Bernard Jocums will argue the case.
While the Supreme Court normally hears oral argument at the Michigan Hall of Justice in Lansing, Supreme Court justices and staff travel to various communities as part of “Court Community Connections” which the court started in 2007 as a public education program aimed principally at high school students. The goal is to help students understand the appellate courts and Michigan’s judicial system.
To prepare for oral argument, students meet with local attorneys, who discuss the case that the court will hear. After the argument, students participate in a debriefing session with the attorneys who argued the case.
“Court Community Connections” will begin at 9:45 a.m. with oral argument starting at 10 a.m., followed by the public debriefing at 10:30 a.m. At approximately 11 a.m., students will participate in a reception with the justices.
