Michael McDaniel, professor and director of WMU Cooley’s Homeland and National Security Law LL.M., recently delivered 28 boxes of coats, socks and bedding to the Church of the Nazarene in Traverse City. McDaniel is the faculty advisor of the law school’s Homeland and National Security Emergency Response and Education Association that worked to collect the items through a collaboration with the church. The Church of Nazarene is a collection site for goods that are sent to a sister church in Poland to help Ukrainian refugees.
After collecting 28 boxes of coats, socks and bedding in early March, WMU-Cooley Law School’s Homeland and National Security Emergency Response and Education Association gathered an additional 18 boxes to assist Ukrainian refugees.
The 18 boxes were part of a joint effort with Monroe Community College and the Ukrainian American Crisis Response Committee of Michigan.
All items collected were dropped off at a warehouse in Hamtramck.
Donations collected earlier in March were part of an established connection with the Church of the Nazarene in Traverse City that has direct ties in Poland to help refugees.
WMU-Cooley’s Homeland and National Security Emergency Response and Education Association provides a ready response team of trained law students that are able to give back in times of national crisis, or assist local communities during an emergency disaster.
The association is led by Homeland and National Security Law LL.M. students Katie Komorowski and Shartel Keith-Groves.
The purpose of the initiative was to offer support to refugees fleeing Ukraine for safety in Poland during Russia’s invasion of that country.
The Church of Nazarene sent some 600 boxes earlier in March to a sister church in Poland so that the items could be distributed to refugees.
