Larry Bullen

Long time Jackson lawyer Lawrence (Larry) Bullen died April 4 in Ann Arbor, at the age of 92.

A lifelong resident of Jackson, Bullen was a graduate of Jackson Public Schools, Jackson Junior College, The University of Michigan, and The University of Michigan Law School.

After graduation from U-M Law School in 1954, Bullen served in the U.S. Army, primarily in the Army of Occupation and later in NATO Service in Germany.

He returned to Jackson in 1956 and practiced law for more than 60 years.

Towards the end of his practice, he devoted much his time to the management of the Weatherwax Foundation, Jackson's largest private grant making foundation.

Bullen served on countless boards, with a particular focus on arts, education, health care and religious groups.

He served as treasurer of the board of WA Foote Memorial Hospital, chairman of the Jackson Hospital Finance Authority, president of Family Service of Jackson, president of Family Service & Children's Aid of Jackson, director and treasurer of the Jackson Community College Foundation, served on the boards of Beth Moser Mental Health Clinic, Hospice of Jackson, the Jackson Symphony Orchestra Association, and the YMCA Trust Fund.

He served St. Paul's Episcopal Church on the Vestry as Junior and Senior Warden of the parish.

Among his many honors are the 2000 Jackson Symphony Golden Baton Award; First Director Emeritus of the Jackson Community College Foundation in 2007; Jackson Community College 2010 Distinguished Service Award; and Jackson Citizen of the Year in 2017.

Bullen was preceded in death by his wife, Valerie Lemper Bullen, and by his sisters, Eunice Washbish and Margaret Ware. He is survived by his children Charlie Bullen (Lynne) of Phoenix, John Bullen of Ann Arbor, Martha Bullen Muhich (Tony) of Grosse Pointe Park, and Tom Bullen (Marylou) of Folsom, Calif.; and by eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will take place later in the spring, details pending. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to a favorite local charity.
