The Department of Attorney General can now accept credit card payments online to fulfill Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced Wednesday.
The project was initiated by the late Kelly Rossman-McKinney last year after she learned a reporter had to drop off a check in person during the pandemic.
“Reporters and the public have Kelly Rossman-McKinney to thank for providing an easier avenue to securing responsive FOIA records,” Nessel said. “Her advocacy for journalists and government transparency can now live on even after her death – a true testament to the impact Kelly had on all of us.”
The department’s FOIA page now reflects an online payment option to fulfill FOIA requests. From now on, requestors will receive an invoice explaining payment options – by check or online credit card transaction.
