American Law Institute Continuing Legal Education (ALI-CLE) will present the webcast “Shackled to Our Screens: How Technology Has Hindered the Legal Profession” on Thursday, June 23, from 2 to 3 p.m.
There is no question that society’s dependence on screens is negatively impacting mental health and well-being. Navigating through the pandemic gave everyone many reasons to exacerbate reliance upon on technology so that everyone could function and stay connected. The high prevalence of substance use and mental health challenges in the legal profession were already astounding, yet the inability to turn away from electronic devices is adding to these feelings of isolation and loneliness. As the nation transitions away from the restrictions of the last two years, it is more important than ever to be mindful of screen dependence and intentional about how to spend time—including prioritizing self-care and wellness.
In this one hour webcast, attendees will gain wellness tips and strategies that can easily be implemented into daily life. The program will also explore how the dependence on anything—from screens to substances—can impact an attorney’s ability to uphold obligations under the Model Rules of Professional Conduct. Just like the electronic devices, everyone can benefit from the occasional “hard reset.”
Taught by the executive director of a major state lawyer assistance service, this program will discuss:
• Trends presenting to lawyer assistance programs, including the prevalence of substance abuse and mental health disorders and how quarantine has played a role
• Signs and symptoms of digital device dependence and related statistics
• The impact daily gratitude can have on overall well-being and happiness
• How screen time can be detrimental to an attorney’s ability to uphold the Model Rules of Professional Conduct
• Strategies, techniques, and tips on how to be more mindful of where to spend time
• Resources available through state lawyer assistance programs
All registrants will receive a set of downloadable course materials to accompany the program.
Cost for the webcast is $99. To register, visit www.ali-cle.org.
