Juneteeth approved as new Michigan court holiday

A Michigan Supreme Court order issued Wednesday added Juneteenth to the official list of court holidays specified in court rules.

Adoption of this rule conforms with federal policy making Juneteenth a legal holiday, and many jurisdictions nationwide have already taken similar action.

Since Juneteenth is a specific day, courts will treat the holiday like similar holidays that might fall on a weekend by making the Friday before or the Monday after the observed date.
This year, since June 19th falls on a Sunday, the court holiday would be observed on Monday, June 20th.

“Juneteenth is an event of profound importance in the history of our nation, and mandatory observance of this holiday by courts statewide sends a message that Michigan’s judiciary values the life experiences of all who seek justice,” said Tom Boyd, State Court Administrator. “We appreciate the speedy work of judges and court administrators to implement the holiday and to inform all stakeholders.”

SBM elections taking place online

Electronic ballots for the 2022 State Bar of Michigan elections have been emailed with online voting ending at 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15.

There are contested races for the Judicial Tenure Commission and the Board of Commissioners in Districts H and I.

All active members of the State Bar are receiving a ballot for the Judicial Tenure race. Unless attorneys addresses on file are in one of the districts where there is a contested race, they will not receive a ballot for any other race.

Michigan lawyers will receive an email message with a link to their personal ballot for the race(s) they are entitled to vote. Members should not forward this email as it is personal ballot information.

Contact Marge Bossenbery at mbossenbery@michbar.org or 517-346-6327 for additional information.
