Plunkett Cooney associate attorney Stephanie M. Brochert was recently elected president of the Women’s Bar Association, Oakland Region of the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan.

Brochert, who was sworn in during the WBA Oakland annual dinner on May 26 at the Birmingham Athletic Club, will serve a one-year term as president.

The WBA has not held this event in person since 2019. It gave the WBA the opportunity to unite past and present leaders of the organization, thank the outgoing officers, and swear in the 2022-2023 E-Board with the oath administered by Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Kameshia Gant.

The event also honored retired Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Denise Langford Morris with the Joan Young Judicial Excellence Award, attorney Channelle Kizy-White, of Kizy Law, with the Evelyn Forrest Distinguished Advocate Award, and Wayne State University Law School student Alexandria Sharpe with the Sarah Killgore Wertman Scholarship.

Immediate Past President Kristina Bilowus, of Michigan State University College of Law, spoke of the accomplishments achieved by the WBA over the past year and commended the robust community of judges, lawyers, and law students that support the organization.

Founded in 1919, the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan (WLAM) works to advance the interest of women in the legal profession and promote equality and justice for all people. The organization has eight regions that provide wide-ranging educational, networking and advocacy programming for lawyers, judges and law students. WLAM has been actively supporting the advancement of women lawyers by seeking their appointment and election to public and professional positions.

A 2019 WLAM Regional Leadership Award recipient, Brochert has been an active member of the WBA Oakland for several years. She has progressed through the organization’s leadership track, having previously served as president-elect, vice president and treasurer.

Brochert, who is a member of Plunkett Cooney’s Bloomfield Hills office, practices primarily in the area of insurance coverage. She represents major property and casualty insurance companies in coverage cases throughout the United States. Her work includes the defense of a variety of claims, including environmental contamination, construction defect and high-exposure product liability coverage disputes.

Admitted to practice law in Michigan, New York and New Jersey, Brochert has experience representing insurers in complex coverage disputes involving multi-million-dollar construction projects, severe personal injuries, exposures to toxic materials, and matters involving state and local government entities, including the city of New York.

Brochert received her law degree, cum laude, from The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law in Washington, D.C. in 2013 and her undergraduate degree, cum laude, from Marist College in 2008.
