Annual Bench Bar Culinary Challenge returns August 16

Grilling for Good is back after two years of the pandemic. The 13th Annual Bench Bar Culinary Challenge will take place Tuesday, August 16, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the home of Judge Kirsten Frank Kelly.

This annual charitable event is one of a kind in metro Detroit for a friendly cook-off between teams from the bench and bar. All proceeds benefit Alternatives for Girls and the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan Foundation’s scholarship fund.

This year, the teams consist of:

• Grilled from the Bench—Wayne County 38th District Court Judge Kathleen Galen, Macomb County 41B District Court Magistrate James McGrail, Oakland County Circuit Court Judges Yasmine lsshak Poles and Jacob Cunningham, Michigan Court of Appeals Judges Kristina Robinson Garrett and Anica Letica.

• Grilled by the Hour—Mike Sullivan, Kari Melkonian, Theresa Asoklis, Kirsten Silwanowicz, Tanya Grillo, Geaneen Arends, and Jennie Breitmeyer.

Attendees will be able to buy voting tickets at the event to determine whether the bench or bar wins the competition.

Task Force on Forensic Science seeks public input

The Michigan Task Force on Forensic Science is seeking public comment at its July meeting. The online meeting will take place Tuesday, July 19, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The public comment period will be conducted at approximately 11:40 a.m.

Taking part in the meeting will be Task Force Co-Chair Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Bridget M. McCormack, Task Force Co-Chair Michigan State Police Col. Joe Gasper, along with Task Force members, and stakeholders. The agenda includes presentations of findings and draft recommendations from the three Task Force subcommittees: Forensic Science Statewide Body; Forensic Science Practice; and Criminal Legal System.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer created the Michigan Task Force on Forensic Science by Executive Order 2021-04 on April 2, 2021 to advise about the state of forensic science in Michigan and to ensure that the criminal legal system delivers justice for the people of Michigan. Executive Order 2021-15 extended the Task Force through December 31, 2022.
