The Jackson Interfaith Shelter—“a home for the homeless”—held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 6 to showcase improvements.
Thanks to community funding, the outside entrance was renovated, the outside entranceway beautified; an inside entrance welcome desk was added as well as air conditioning, a remodeled kitchen, new resource room with computers, and an outdoor fenced-in playground. The organization has also acquired homes for transitional housing.
The nonprofit organization, that has 74 beds for men, women and families, provides emergency shelter, three meals a day, and assists with other physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Last year, the shelter provided over 15,000 nights of lodging and over 59,000 meals.
Jackson Interfaith Shelter was started in 1974 by Beverly Garges to serve homeless alcoholic men, after Garges heard about a man who froze to death under a bridge in Jackson and wanted to ensure this never happened again.
