The daughter of immigrants who fled from the Persian Gulf War recently was named recipient of one of the 2022 scholarships awarded by the Macomb County Bar Foundation.
Tina Toma, a 2024 juris doctor candidate at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, was selected by the foundation to receive the Kimberly M. Cahill Memorial Scholarship.
The $3,000 scholarship honors the memory of Cahill, a former State Bar of Michigan and Macomb County Bar Association president who died in 2008.
The foundation selected Raven Manzella, a student at Michigan State University, to receive its 2022 Philip F. Greco Memorial Scholarship.
Julia DeLapp, a student at Wayne State University Law School, was named the recipient of the foundation’s Trustees Scholarship.
Toma, a Shelby Township resident, credits Utica Community Schools for establishing an academic foundation that enabled her to achieve a master's degree in business administration from Wayne State University Mike Ilitch School of Business.
In her application to the foundation, Toma said the Cahill scholarship "is a fitting tribute to a woman who had a lasting impact on the legal community.
"As a recipient of this scholarship, I will make every effort to properly maintain and uphold her legacy during my studies and into the legal profession by giving back to the local community."
The Kimberly M. Cahill Leadership Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a second or third-year law student who is currently enrolled in classes at an accredited Michigan law school.
The recipient must demonstrate qualities of leadership as well as the ability to inspire and lead others to a defined objective
The recipient must also demonstrate a need for financial assistance and an academic standing of 3.0 GPA or above.
Manzella, who lives in Shelby Township, attended Utica High School where she said she "discovered my passion for public service, gave my first speech and hoped to start my legal career."
Since earning her bachelor of arts degree with honors from MSU in 2020, Raven served within the Michigan Department of Attorney General and was a member of the Internal Affairs Committee of the MSU College of Law Student Bar Association.
The Philip F. Greco Memorial Scholarship is to be awarded to a second or third-year law school student who has maintained a good academic standing, demonstrated financial need and a commitment to serve the area legal community. The scholarship is funded by National Title Group.
DeLapp was second in her class of 107 and also earned the top grade in Legal Research and Writing and Property. In addition, she served as editor on the Wayne Law Review, research assistant for Prof. Christopher Lund and completed an externship at the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office.
Before entering law school, DeLapp earned a graduate degree in theology and taught high school before entering law school.
"Much like teaching, I view the practice of law as other-oriented. I seek to serve and I came to the law in order to fulfill that goal,” she said.
The Trustees Law School Scholarship is awarded to a student who has high scholastic achievement and demonstrates a need for financial assistance as well as a commitment to serve or contribute to the legal community in Macomb County.
The Macomb Bar Foundation is the charitable affiliate of the Macomb County Bar. The early leaders of the foundation had a vision to one day provide financial assistance to deserving law school students.
Since 2007, the foundation has awarded more than $140,000 in scholarships.
