IABAM hosts Wood Fired Pizza Night

The Italian American Bar Association of Michigan will host a Wood Fired Pizza Night on Wednesday, Aug. 24, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Members and guests will be able to enjoy all they can eat wood fired pizzas and wine at the pavillion at Freedom Hill on Metropolitan Parkway in Sterling Heights.

Cost for the event is $50.

‘Nuts and Bolts of Appeals’ explored in SADO webinar

The State Appellate Defender Office will present a webinar on “Nuts and Bolts of Appeals” on Thursday, Aug. 25, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. via Zoom.

In Part 1-Appeals, 9 a.m. to noon, attendees will learn how to spot issues, write and format an appeal by leave and by right, and develop postconviction motions.  

In Part 2-District to Circuit Court Appeals, 1 to 3:30 p.m., attendees will learn the procedure and timing of district to circuit court appeals, how they differ from COA appeals, and the differences in various jurisdictions, with a focus on Oakland and Macomb counties.

The webinar will be presented by Melissa Krauskopf, a 2004 Western Michigan University Cooley Law School graduate who has been practicing criminal defense since 2005, and has been a MAACS roster attorney doing appeals since 2013.  

She, along with her law firm partner, founded K and Q Law in 2008.  In 2018, Krauskopf was awarded with the Barbara R. Levine Award for Excellence in Appellate Advocacy and received recognition for restoring appellate rights for individuals who had been left behind due to a breakdown in the system.

Law school marks Constitution Day with virtual event

In recognition of Constitution Day, Western Michigan University Cooley Law School will present a Community Conversations virtual event on Friday, Sept. 16, from noon to 1 p.m.

Each year, WMU-Cooley Law School and faculty members participate in activities honoring Constitution Day.  

During this panel discussion about the U.S. Constitution, attendees will hear about how its drafters had the foresight to create something that could evolve with society and grow to protect the rights of all.
