Annual Access to Justice report released for 2021

The Access to Justice Campaign has released its annual report summing up the centralized campaign’s efforts to increase legal community donations for 15 legal aid programs in the 2021 calendar year.

This year’s report includes several examples of how legal aid helped low-income families in Michigan, and how receiving access to justice changed lives. In addition, the report applauds members of the legal community who donate to the campaign, highlights the partnerships between legal aid programs and pro bono attorneys, and demonstrates the importance of having civil legal aid to help people effectuate their rights under Michigan’s Clean Slate legislation, which expands the eligibility of expunging previous convictions.

The release of the annual report coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Access to Justice Campaign in Michigan. The campaign continues its effort to provide resources for civil legal aid, and ultimately increase services that protect and preserve the health, homes, and livelihoods of low-income families.

The Access to Justice Campaign is a partnership with the State Bar of Michigan, administered by the Michigan State Bar Foundation, to increase resources for 15 civil legal aid organizations throughout Michigan.

Attorney and law student virtual support groups begin in October

The State Bar of Michigan is offering two virtual support groups starting next month. Both are facilitated by clinical case managers from SBM’s Lawyers and Judges Assistance Program.

One support group is open to all Michigan attorneys and meets from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays. The other group specifically serves law students and meets from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays. Attendees can join any or all the meetings with no obligation for continued participation.

The lawyer group meets via Zoom from October 5 to November 23. The cost is $5 per session, or $30 for all eight weeks, if paid in advance.

The law student group meets via Zoom from October 4 to November 22. There is no cost.

Both support groups offer an opportunity for attendees to connect with their peers and focus on personal wellness. Attendees must be willing to respect confidentiality, participate with an open mind, remain tolerant of others’ views, and explore the importance of well-being.

To register, email contactLJAP@mich bar.org or call 1-800-996-5522.
