Each year, Western Michigan University Cooley Law School hosts a public discussions on Constitution Day regarding constitutional effects on current topics. This year’s discussion will feature Michigan Court of Appeals Chief Judge Elizabeth Gleicher, Second District, and Dr. William Myers, associate professor of political science and international studies at the University of Tampa. The virtual discussion will be held on Friday, September 16, from noon to 1p.m.
During the discussion, which will be moderated by WMU-Cooley Constitutional Law Professor Brendan Beery, Gleicher and Myers will review the status of abortion laws in Michigan and Florida after SCOTUS’ ruling in Dobbs. They will discuss Florida’s 15-week ban on abortions and Michigan’s recent rulings on the 1931 abortion ban and the “Rights to Reproductive Freedom Initiative,” and how the Right to Privacy in Florida’s Constitution protects abortion.
Gleicher was appointed to the Michigan Court of Appeals in 2007. Previously, she was an attorney in private practice for 27 years. She began her career at Goodman, Eden, Millender, & Bedrosian in Detroit and opened her own litigation practice in 1994.
Myers earned a Ph.D. in Political Science from Michigan State University and a B.A. in History from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Myers’ research focuses on judicial politics, intergovernmental relations, and political behavior in the United States, Australia, Canada, Ghana, and the European Union.
