Applications being accepted for Michigan Supreme Court vacancy

Applications are now being accepted for a seat on the Michigan Supreme Court to replace vacating Chief Justice Bridget Mary McCormack.

To be considered for this position, you must be a State Bar of Michigan member who meets the legal qualifications for this office.

For this vacancy, the Governor's Office is requesting the following supplemental materials in addition to the Judicial Questionnaire Packet:

1. Provide three briefs and/or opinions that reflect the strength of your legal analysis and writing ability. If possible, at least one should involve a question of constitutional law, and at least one should be an opinion or brief related to a dispositive motion or an appeal.

2. Provide a list of at least five opposing counsels in recent cases, or if you currently serve on the bench, five attorneys that have recently appeared before you. Please include their name, p number, phone number, and the date of your most recent case-related interaction.

3. Supplemental Questionnaire

Judicial appointment questionnaire, writing samples, resume, and supplemental documents must be submitted using the online portal at www.michigan.gov/appointments and received by 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 25. Additional letters of recommendation can still be submitted after your initial submission to judicialappointments@michigan.gov.

Law school to conduct 110th Annual Red Mass

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law invites the legal community to celebrate the 110th Annual Red Mass on Tuesday, September 20, beginning at noon at Ss. Peter & Paul Jesuit Church, 629 East Jefferson Ave. in Detroit.

 A luncheon reception in the atrium at Detroit Mercy Law immediately follows the service.  For those unable to join in person, a livestream will be available on the Detroit Mercy Law Homepage.

This year’s Red Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Nathaniel Romano, S.J., Assistant Director of Campus Ministry, Marquette University.  Wayne County 36th District Court Judge Shannon A. Holmes will lead the Renewal of the Lawyers’ Oath of Commitment.
