County's longest serving chief judge dies at age

Funeral services were held Monday for former Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Peter J. Maceroni, who died Sept. 28 at the age of 82.

Maceroni, who served more than two decades as a judge, died about a year after he was diagnosed with cancer.

A lifelong resident of the Detroit area, Maceroni received his bachelor’s degree from Hillsdale College and law degree from Wayne State University Law School in 1965.

After 25 years in private practice, he was elected to the Macomb County Circuit Court bench in 1990 and re-elected in 1996, 2002 and 2008.

In March 1992, Maceroni took over as chief judge and served in that position for nearly 13 years — the longest reign in Macomb County’s history as chief judge.

Maceroni was a member of the executive board of the Michigan Judges Association and served as president of the association in 2003.

He was a member and officer as well of several other associations and boards.

Among the dozens of awards and honors bestowed upon him during his long legal career, Maceroni received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014 from the master section of the Macomb County Bar Association.

He was honored as the Man of the Year in 1993 by the Columbus Day Celebration Committee. In 1996, Maceroni was appointed to the Michigan Trial Court Assessment Commission by Gov. John Engler.

In 1997, Maceroni received the Outstanding County Elected Official award from the Michigan Association of Counties and also was the recipient of the Presidents Award from the Italian American Bar Association of Michigan.

The March of Dimes honored Maceroni in 2000 by naming him the Alexander Macomb Citizen of the Year.

According to his obituary published by Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons Inc., Maceroni “dearly loved his family, his Catholic faith, playing and watching golf, Italian food and culture, travel, cheering on Detroit sports teams, playing cards with his buddies and relaxing on Marco Island where he was known as a gregarious friend with a big laugh, a passionate golfer and a great dancer.

“He was — and will always remain — deeply loved by all who were lucky enough to cross paths with him during his lifetime.”

Son James Maceroni is a  Macomb County Circuit Court judge while daughter and attorney Patricia is deputy administrator of the Michigan Appellate Assigned Counsel system. Another son, Patrick, serves as a deputy sheriff and son Peter is a doctor.

Other survivors include his wife, Martha; four step-children and six grandchildren.

The funeral mass was held at St. Paul of Tarsus in Clinton Township. The family asks that conributions be made to the Italian American Cultural Society and Hospice of Michigan.
