Training planned for workers at speciality courts

The Michigan Judicial Institute and Problem Solving Courts will present an online training on “How Being Trauma-Informed Improves Criminal Justice Response” Wednesday, Oct. 19 from noon to 4 p.m. via Zoom.

This training is open to all team members in a problem-solving courts. Attendees will learn what trauma is, how to create an awareness of the impact that trauma has on behavior and how to develop trauma-informed responses.

The event is tailored for criminal justice professionals to help avoid re-traumatizing individuals, increase safety for all, and decrease recidivism.

SBM section hosts annual program

The Insurance and Indemnity Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan will conduct its Annual Business Meeting & Program on Thursday, Oct. 20, at Saint John’s Resort in Plymouth.

The schedule will feature:

• 3-4 p.m., Annual Business Meeting (also available via Zoom)
• 4-6 p.m., program: “How inflation and rising costs of labor and material can increase an insured’s losses after a major catastrophe.”

The program cost is $20 (includes two drink tickets per person and light hors d’oeuvres).

Self-defense class hosted by WLAM

In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, The Women Lawyers Association of Michigan is hosting a series of self-defense classes around the state.

On Saturday, Oct. 22, the WLAM will present a class from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Krav Maga Detroit located at 950 W, Maple Rd., Suite D, in Troy.

Krav Maga is the official hand to hand combat system of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). In Israel, men and women serve in the armed forces. Krav Maga is what they learn.

Participants should dress in gym clothes, clean shoes, and bring water and a snack.

During the class, there will be a focus on the core essentials. Attendees will learn movement; stance; posture; eye contact/proximity; confidence in movement; strikes (open palm, punches, elbows); kicks (groin); defenses against chokes.

Cost for the class is $35 per person.
