Webpage aimed at educating the public about the rule of law
The State Bar of Michigan has launched a new webpage to help raise awareness and understanding of the rule of law.
Called “The Justice System and You,” the page discusses the importance of the rule of law and how it applies to the public, lawyers and judges. It also links to Michigan Legal Milestones that set rule of law precedence and includes links to other helpful resources.
Rule of law is the foundation of the American political system. It dictates that all people are equally subject to the law and that an impartial judiciary settles disputes.
“A civil society exists because, under the rule of law, disputes should be settled according to the established law of the land. And all people, no matter their wealth or power, are subject to those laws,” said SBM
President James W. Heath in his “Respecting the rule of law” column for November’s Bar Journal.
“The Justice System and You” page can be found at michbar.org/ruleoflaw. It is also located on the State Bar of Michigan website under the “For the Public” tab, “Civic Education Links.”
Judicial Institute offers online certification exam
The Michigan Judicial Institute will conduct the Juvenile Probation Officer/Caseworker Certification Examination on Thursday, February 23.
Michigan Supreme Court Administrative Order 1985-5 requires a juvenile [court] probation officer/caseworker to complete the Michigan Judicial Institute (MJI) certification training within two years of employment.
The examination is based upon information in the MJI Juvenile Probation Officer/Caseworker Self-Instructional Manual.
The exam is now a computer-based application; however, applicants must still pre-register to take the exam for only one time slot: 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m.
Closer to the exam date, applicants will receive additional information regarding accessing the State Court Administrative Office Learning Management System where the exam is housed.
Registration can be completed by visiting https://mjieducation.mi.gov and scrolling to “upcoming MJI events.”
The deadline to register is Friday, February 17.
