Keith Soul Food Luncheon returns

For 35 years, Detroiters have gathered during the month of February at the request of federal Judge Damon J. Keith to acknowledge the contributions of African Americans to this nation’s rich history. This year’s 35th Annual Soul Food Luncheon will return in person for the first time since Keith’s passing in 2019 and the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

The 35th Annual Damon J. Keith Soul Food Luncheon, taking place on Tuesday, February 14, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse in Detroit, is presented by the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights at Wayne State University Law School and the family of Keith Clerks.

“For more than three decades the Damon J. Keith Soul Food Luncheon has been the most important Black History Month event in Detroit.  We are excited to continue this tradition and pay tribute to Judge Keith's life and legacy,” Peter J. Hammer, director of the Damon J. Keith Center.

Every year, a local Detroiter who has made an outstanding contribution to the African American community, bestowing upon him or her the coveted Soul and Spirit Humanitarian Award. This year’s celebration will continue that tradition by honoring Janet Webster Jones, lifelong Detroiter, and owner of Source Booksellers.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, one of Keith’s former law clerks, will be the event’s keynote speaker.

Those who would like to attend the luncheon should register at https://bit.ly/3Xy6x6B by Sunday, February 12.

Dykema attorneys look at ‘E/AV, IP, Government Regulations’

As part of its Dykema Drives Auto Webinars, Dykema will offer “E/AV, IP, Government Regulations” on Tuesday, February 23, from 1 to 2 p.m.

Many respondents expressed an industry-wide focus on legal benefits and risks tied to new electric and autonomous vehicle technologies, including increased government regulation and incentives and newly developed intellectual property. Policymakers have shown they are more than willing to invest the resources necessary to not only develop these technologies, but also, more importantly, scale them, particularly electric vehicle and battery technologies. Likewise, autonomous vehicle technology is expected to garner legislative attention, with more focus on safety and risk-minimization regulations rather than incentives.

This program will review these legal trends and more.

Speaking at the webinar will be Dykema’s Tom Moga, member, Bloomfield Hills; Andy Buczek, government policy advisor, Lansing: and Clay Cossé, member, Dallas.
